Many conferences, summits and seminars are focusing on the theme of "SMART" cities and buildings! They all celebrate high end technologies applied to luxurious buildings, towers and real estate developments targeting high income and exclusive customers. All projects are illustrating the use of technology to achieve energy efficiency, energy conservation, facility management and in general sustainability. All so called Smart technologies are focusing on convincing the client to pay more now and save more later.
No attempts are made to address the low income group and poor communities, retrofit the current building stocks and environments to make them "smart"!
I think there is a need to address the poor and low cost projects with appropriate affordable technologies. The reward will be much higher than just targeting luxurious and iconic projects and will serve more people and save more energy.
